I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Not Created for Chaos--Jan. 22, 2021

 God, you formed the earth and made it,

you did not create it for chaos.

Do I not care that they are perishing—

children who labor in sweat shops

to make clothing for me to wear?

They have the same Master as I do,

and you are not partial to me.

They wait for you to help;

they wait and watch

for the morning.

Lectionary Readings

Isa. 45:18-25

Eph. 6:1-9

Mark 4:35-41

Selected Verses

Ps. 130:6

…my soul waits for the Lord
          more than those who watch for the morning,
          more than those who watch for the morning.

Isa. 45:18

For thus says the LORD,
who created the heavens
          (he is God!),
who formed the earth and made it
          (he established it;
he did not create it a chaos,
          he formed it to be inhabited!):
I am the LORD, and there is no other.

Eph. 6:9

And, masters, do the same to them.  Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Master in heaven, and with him there is no partiality.

Mark 4:38-39a

But [Jesus] was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and [his disciples] woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”  He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace!  Be still!”
